Nine apparel design students get eco-friendly
Texas Tech`s United States Green Building Council (USGBC) student organization will host a fashion display at South Plains Mall May 6 through June 1. Nine Apparel Design & Manufacturing students designed and submitted garments composed of sustainable materials such as recycled cardboard, reused coffee filters and bottle caps. Danielle Lessing, Green Project committee member and USGBC officer, said because the project was formed as a reflection of Green Week, the main goal was to let the public know that being green can be achieved in creative ways. “We wanted to give students the opportunity to design garments made of eco-friendly materials,” said Lessing. “Our hope is that viewers of the garments will be inspired or interested by their creativity and show that it is easy to be green.” These garments were created for the Green Project to bring awareness of Green Week, held April 26-30, and to conclude Arbor Day. The main concept of Green Week was to provide education on the concept of sustainability by being involved in actions as simple as recycling.
